Zonisamide is a prescribed drug used as an adjunct therapy to relieve the symptoms of a certain type of seizures in population afflicted with epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. It belongs to the class of drugs known as Anticonvulsants. It is available in the market with the brand name Zonegran.

Dosage of Medication

•    The drug comes in the form of a capsule meant to be taken orally by mouth.

•    The dosage strength of a capsule includes- 25mg, 50mg and 100mg respectively

•   The initial recommended dosage in the case of a partial seizure is 100mg PO q day followed by a 100mg increment for 2 weeks not exceeding 600mg PO q day. 

•    The initial recommended dosage for weight loss is 100mg increment for 2 weeks not exceeding 600mg PO q day. Administer 600mg/day in those patients who have not lost even 5% of the weight during the course of medication.

•    Follow the directions written on the prescription label very carefully. In case of queries do ask your doctor or pharmacist. 

•    Intake the drug exactly as per the directions. Do not overdose. 

•    Close monitoring of dosage is recommended in the case of renal and hepatic impairment

•    Your doctor will gradually increase your drug dose starting from low to high depending upon your clinical condition

•     This drug shall help to tame your symptoms but may not fully cure it. For full benefits, a few weeks or more shall be required. Do continue with the drug even if you feel better. Abrupt stoppage of the drug may lead to side effects impacting your overall condition. 

Warnings& Precautions

•    Do inform your doctor in case you are allergic or hypersensitive to this drug or its derivative. Ask your pharmacist to check into medication ingredients guide before dispensing the drug. 

•    Intake an adequate amount of fluids so as to avoid kidney stone formation

•    In case your creatinine levels are constantly raised, discontinue the drug immediately.

•    Do not discontinue this anticonvulsant drug abruptly as this may cause withdrawal symptom. It is advised to ask your doctor at every step.

•    Tardiness, fatigue may occur as side-effects during the first month of drug administration

•    Multi-organ hypersensitivity may occur as an adverse drug reaction. Use this drug with caution in case you are allergic to sulphonamide derivatives.

•    Do inform your doctor clearly regarding the past medical history and the list of medications you are taking. 

•    Do inform your doctor in case you have vision disease, kidney disease or liver disorder. 

•    In the case of pregnancy, inform your doctor as use of Zonisamide during pregnancy may hamper the health of the fetus

•    Avoid breastfeeding if you are on Zonisamide

•    In case of tooth extraction or any other surgery, inform your dentist or doctor regarding this drug intake

•    Do not drive any vehicle or operate any machine immediately after taking this drug as it causes drowsiness

•    Do not intake alcohol while you are taking this drug

•    You may experience mood swings along with changes in your mental health while you are on this drug regime.

How does it help in the treatment?

 The mechanism of action of this drug is unknown.  It reduces the abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is more active in the tonic phase than the clonic phase. The ingestion of this drug stabilises the neuronal membranes by acting on sodium and calcium levels without affecting GABA activity.
