THERAPEUTIC USES.: -

This drug is an amalgamation of two hormones: Estrogen (Ethinyl Estradiol) and   Progesterone (Drospirenone). It is a prescribed steroid hormone and major female sex hormone.  This substitute is used to prevent the release of an egg during the menstrual cycle. It is available in the market with the trade name Yaz.

Dosage of Medication

•    This drug is available in the form of a tablet meant to be taken by mouth. It is usually ingested with or without food.

•    This combination comes in the dosage strength of 3mg/0.02 mg

•     Depending upon the clinical condition of the patient, the doctor may prescribe this substitute either to be taken daily or according to a rotating schedule that alternates a period of time.

•    For Contraception, the recommended dosage is 3mg drosperinone/ 0.02mg Estrogen PO qDay for 24 days then continue it for next 4 days.

•    In the case of moderate acne vulgaris, the initial recommended dosage is 3mg drosperinone/ 0.02mg Estrogen PO qDay for 24 days then continue it for the next 4 days.

•    For Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, the initial recommended dosage is 3mg drosperinone/ 0.02mg Estrogen PO qDay for 24 days then continue it for next 4 days

•    Do take your medicine as per the prescribed schedule. Adhere to the instructions mentioned on the prescription label and in case you are unable to understand a part of it, do not hesitate to ask your doctor instead of panic.

•    Do not consume the drug more often than prescribed. Initially, your doctor may start you with a low dose and gradually increase the dose if the symptoms still persist.

•     Do ask your pharmacist or doctor for a leaflet of the manufacturer's information.

 

Warnings & Precautions

•    The drug is contraindicated in the case of renal impairment

•    The drug is contraindicated in the case of hepatic impairment

•    The women are advised to use additional non-hormonal therapy along with this drug regimen for the first 7 days

•    As per the CDC guidelines, wait for 21-42 days for initiation of therapy in the postpartum phase without any additional risks of Venous thromboembolism

•    Postpartum women who have undergone a caesarean section delivery, it is advised to wait for ≥ 6 weeks before initiation of this drug regimen

•    Women with diagnosed risk factors for VTE (Venous Thromboembolism), this drug is absolutely contraindicated

•    Women who have undergone a second-trimester abortion, wait for ≥ 4 weeks before starting of this drug therapy

•    The drug is absolutely contraindicated in women> 35 years of age who are addicted to smoking. Oral contraceptives are a big No for them

•    The drug is contraindicated in case you are hypersensitive to this drug or its derivatives, hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, Migraine, Undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding, Pregnancy and Adrenal insufficiency

•    Use this drug with caution in patients having a family history of breast cancer

•    It is advised to discontinue the drug 4 weeks prior to any major surgical procedure

 

How does it help in the treatment?

It works via the mechanism of suppression of ovulation process.
