Retrovir (Zidovudine) is a type of medication called as the Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors - NRTI which used to treat HIV, hepatitis and similar virus from causing effect on the foetus health. 

It is important to understand that the medication does not cure the infection. It only controls its spread to the unborn child. HIV virus uses reverse transcriptase to infect cells while the Retrovir (Zidovudine) helps to prevent its spread. So, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding a child so that the doctor can plan your dosage accordingly.
