Propylthiouracil is a form of antithyroid medication used to treat overactive thyroid gland or hyperthyroidism. This condition occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. However, this medication is not recommended for children.


The Propylthiouracil is delivered in form of tablets to be taken thrice everyday. This helps to reduce the effects of the thyroid secretions using specific blockers. This is a vital medication for treatment of hyperthyroidism, extreme weight loss, thyrotoxicosis or is used with combination of radioiodine to get the best results. 


Common side effects of using Propylthiouracil includes - nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, rash or itching, shortness of breath and hair loss.
