CHEMICAL NAME Carbimazole (car - BIMA- zol)


Neomercazole (Carbimazole) is a form of antithyroid medicine used to treat overactive thyroid gland or hyperthyroidism. This is when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone and leads to weight loss, sweating, diarrhea, etc. 

The medication is used to reduce the effect of the hyperactive thyroid using blockers. These use organic binding of iodine through the inhibition of iodination. This is a vital medication for treatment of thyrotoxicosis or can be used with combination of radioiodine. 


Common side effects of using Neomercazole (Carbimazole) includes - tiredness, dizziness, diarrhea, constipation, shortness of breath, hair loss, rashes, etc. 


However, much serious side effects may include - 

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing 
  • Swelling of face, lips or tongue
  • Rash, itching or hives
  • Blood in urine
