CHEMICAL NAME Alendronate (a-LEN-drone-ate)


Fosamax (Alendronate) is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss especially osteoporosis in the case of adults. It causes your bones to become thinner and break easily. The condition causes bones to become thinner post menopause or due to age. The chances of such issues rise up as you age or if you take corticosteroid injections for longer periods of time.

Fosamax (Alendronate) belongs to the class of medications known as bisphosphonates and works by slowing down bone loss. As a result, it helps to reduce the risk of fractures. 

Common side effects of using Fosamax (Alendronate) includes - diarrhea, upset stomach, gas, nausea fatigue, etc. 

 However, much serious side effects may include - 

  • Ear pain
  • Bone or muscle pain
  • Groin pain
  • Swelling of ankles and other joints
  • Black tarry stools
  • Vomit that resembles coffee grounds


Do not use the Fosamax (Alendronate)  if you are allergic to it or if you have certain health issues like - heartburn, achalasia, esophagus issues, low calcium levels, inability to stand upright, hypocalcemia, ulcers or, kidney or stomach issues.  It can also interfere with calcium, iron and mineral supplements.

1. What special care should I take during the course of treatment? 


Answer - If you are taking the medication, time the same at before bedtime or after raising up for the day. This will help your body to absorb the medication without causing any major side-effects

2. Can I drink milk or take dairy products? 

 Answer- You need to avoid taking dairy products like coffee, tea, soda, mineral water, antacids, milk, yoghurt or calcium rich juices to boost the absorption of medication.
