Clindamycin is the generic name of the prescription drug Cleocin. Clindamycin which belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics that fight. It is used to treat certain bacterial infection. It is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It also used in post-operative infections.

Clindamycin comes in a various formulation (capsules, creams, gels, injection, etc)


Clindamycin can cause diarrhea, which may be severe or lead to serious. If you have a problem which is related to intestinal tract like diarrhea, colitis etc, stop using this medicine and call your doctor.


Apply or take Clindamycin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take or apply more or less than instructed by your doctor.

It is very important that you continue taking the medication as prescribed until you have finished it all, even if your symptoms improve and you start to feel better..

How Clindamycin works.:-

It comes in the category of lincosamide (lincomycin )antibiotics. It works by stopping bacteria from producing the protein they need to reproduce and spread infection in your body.

Clindamycin side effects.:-

Talk to your doctor or seek immediate medical help if any of the following common side effects of clindamycin do not go away or become severe:

  • Mild rash or itching
  • Stomach pain, nausea
  • Skin problems, such as hives, rash, red, shedding, or peeling skin
  • Signs of low blood pressure
  • Vein irritation (if you are receiving injections of clindamycin)
  • Fever or body aches
  • Some side effects of Clindamycin may occur although not everybody gets them & usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.


Before taking Clindamycin talk to your doctor if you have or had any of the following conditions.:-

  • You are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any of these drugs ingredients.
  • You have Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, any other type of colitis, or any condition that affects your intestines.
  • You have meningitis.


Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effect on the foetus, although it can vary. Please consult your doctor.

The following drugs are known to interact with clindamycin.:-

  • Birth-control treatments, including ones that contain the following: desogestrel, dienogest, drospirenone, estradiol, ethynodiol, levonorgestrel
  • Mycophenolate mofetil.
  • Many drugs that are used during surgery, such as the muscle-controlling drugs atracurium , pancuronium, cisatrcurium rocuronium etc.
  • Sodium picosulfate.


1) What if you miss a dose of Clindamycin.

  • If you miss a dose of clindamycin, try to take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time.
  • Do not take/apply two doses of the medication at the same time.
