Is sirolimus and rapamycin is same?

Simply put the answer is yes! Sirolimus happens to be a macrolide compound that is also known as rapamycin. It is used to provide a coating to the coronary stents and also to prevent organ transplant rejection in humans. The compound is also used in the treatment of a rare pulmonary disease – lymphangioleiomyomatosis. This medicinal compound is also used to treat a wide variety of other ailments amongst humans.

The compound

This compound has an immunosuppressant reaction of the human body. This is all the more so why the compound is found to be extra useful in preventing the rejection particularly in the vase of kidney transplant. This compound inhibits the activation of the B cells and the T cells in the human body. In order to do this their sensitivity is reduced to the interleukin-2 through the inhibition of the mTOR.

The genesis

This compound or Sirolimus 1mg tablets was obtained out of the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus . It was Mr. Surendra Nath Sehgal who first isolated the compound back in the year 1972 from the samples of Streptomyces hygroscopicus which was got from the Easter Island. In the initial phase the compound was named rapamycin after the indigenous name of the island Rapa Nui.

Its original usage

In the initial phase this compound was developed to be used as an antifungal agent. However at a later stage this usage or application was discontinued. This was done when the potent immunosuppressive and antiproliferative qualities of the compound was dawned on the scientific community. These properties of the compound can be traced to its ability of act as an mTOR inhibitor.

Current applications

In the present times the compound has been approved y the Food and Drug Association of the US. This was confirmed in September 1999. The compound is sold under the trade name of Rapamune by Pfizer. In the opening of the discussion we have mentioned that this compound is used as a means of treatment for lymphangioleiomyomatosis, prevention of transplant rejection, especially in kidneys and Coronary stent coating. In addition to them the compound is also used in the treatment of vascular malformations, tuberous sclerosis complex, acts against aging, atherosclerosis, lupus, lymphatic malformation, Graft versus host disease, etc.

Adverse effects

Sirolimus is one of the most effective medical compounds that is put to use I the recent times. Adverse effects of this medicine are really quite low. Not much has been found about the negative effects as the cases where such effects are seen are less than 20% of all the patients who are treated with the compound. Some of the common adverse effects of this medicine are UTI, anemia, abdominal pain, headache, fever, nausea, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infection, hyper tension, chest pain etc. About 3 to 20% patients treated with the medicine might have to face this situation.

Use in COVID-19

Sirolimus or rapamycin is also found to be effective in treating some very severe cases of respiratory syndrome in people who are infected with COVID-19 cases. Since the compound happens  to be an effective immunosuppressant it can reduce the cytoline storm that can be witnessed in very serious COVID-19 cases. The cell proliferation inhibition by the drug of generic rapamycin tablets can also reduce the viral replication.

A great amount of research is under process regarding this particular medicinal compound. The researches that have been undertaken try to understand about the exact qualities and the properties of the compound. This is being researched so that the compound can be put to active and successful usage for treating other medical conditions. As of now some risk factors are also attached to the application of the compound. To further confirm them or eradicate these facts more researches are under way.

In more ways than one sirolimus or rapamycin happens to be a potential medical compound. It has been found a long time back in history and has been put to different usage since then.
